Songwriting in Nature
Meet Zoe Harris
Program Designer and Lead Instructor
Zoe finds great peace and rejuvenation in nature and enjoys being active outside. Zoe feels very fortunate to have spent 25 years working as a specialist teacher in elementary schools in B.C., Saskatchewan and Taiwan. She currently teaches English as an Additional Language at Lester B. Pearson School. Not having kids of her own at home means that Zoe throws all her energy into her students at school. Her teaching methods often include immersing her students in their interests, bringing out their creativity and individuality, and inquiry methods. She also loves working with students on an extracurricular level, bringing the joy of art, music and performance into their lives. Zoe is at heart an artist. Zoe has pursued expressing her creativity through several different art forms, including acrylic and water-color painting, dance, script-writing and film. She dabbled for many years but has more recently chosen music as her main form of artistic expression, now playing the ukulele regularly, loving the versatility of the instrument. Zoe has played and performed in a couple of bands at a few private parties and fundraisers, as well as more recently as a solo-artist at local open mics. She is an avid song-writer. Zoe would describe herself as “Jack of all trades, master of none”. Even though she would say she is neither an exceptional singer or instrumentalist, she finds great joy and satisfaction in the song-writing process. Her goal for performing is always to pass good energy to her audience! Even though she was not born here, Zoe has always felt grounded walking through the prairie landscapes in and around Saskatoon. Zoe wants to pay her respects to the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakoda Sioux, and Métis peoples who have cared for this Treaty 6 land for generations.
Our Song writing in Nature program provides younger learners with a chance to enjoy both outdoor explorations along with composition. A variety of teaching techniques will be used, as well as backdrops and learning environments.
